GREEN, YELLOW, BLUE, OH MY!
Just like they say (whoever “they” are), the eyes are a window into the soul. Well, then consider your front door the passageway into your home’s soul. A pretty and welcoming entrance sets the tone for what guests can expect when they enter your home. Nowadays, that tone can be set by much more than a wood stain. To really give guests a dose of WOW factor, opt for a painted front door in a color that compliments your home’s exterior, landscaping, and your personality! There are a zillion different choices out there when it comes to color options.
Here are some things to think about when choosing a door color.
- Think about the style of your home. Is it a craftsman? Cape Cod? Victorian? This can be a driving factor as to which direction to go in choosing a color. Houses with a more stately feel, like a colonial or Victorian, may benefit better with a color that gives off a more regal vibe, such as navy, deep red, hunter green, or deep plum. A craftsman, Cape Cod, or cottage style would work well with a color that is more playful, like sunny yellow, bright red, robin’s egg blue, or light green. Many Mediterranean homes can pull of the really bright colors like turquoise, mint, and even pink!
- Consider other colors already being used on your home. Your door can be an accent to other colors. If your home’s facade is neutral, like a light grey or some version of white, then picking a color that compliments it will be much easier. Many Cape Cod and cottage style offer this luxury. Is your home red brick? Take that into consideration. Deep burgundy or a shade of blue could work wonders! Do you have bright colored siding? Think about what colors compliment your siding color. For example, reds and yellows look really nice against blue siding.
- Lastly, what colors make you happy? This may be the MOST important thing to think about! You’re the one that has to look at that door everyday. What colors are you automatically drawn too, reds, blues, greens? Start there and pick a color within that shade that compliments your house and you will be good to go!
